The riesling for the season.
Riesling is old as the hills. Its earliest records date from 15th century Germany in fact. Granted, the hills around our place are way older than that, but it is fair to say that by human standards, Riesling is a wine varietal with a long and storied history.
Beloved by Queen Victoria, and as in-demand (and pricey) as wines from Champagne and Bordeaux — Riesling was the pride of Germany in the 19th century. Two world wars saw its star fade undeservedly into the background.
Happily, Riesling has been having a re-emergence since the late 90’s. It’s once again the most widely planted varietal in Germany, and you can find pockets of it in many other places around the world, too. Including Bannockburn, Central Otago (at our place).
Our Riesling comes from Matt’s Black Rabbit vineyard, and it’s delicious. Don’t take our word for it. Listen to the folk at Cuisine:
A wonderfully bright style with very ripe citrus aromas. It is like biting into a crisp fresh red apple and being excited to discover a sorbet of ripe lime juice inside. Beautifully balanced with enough poise and length to carry the medium sweetness.
If that makes your mouth water, you can grab a glass of it at Cazador in Auckland — a second generation family owned restaurant with a storied history all of its own. On the topic of Riesling, owner, Bex Smidt, says, “I love the variety, from bone dry to aromatic and sweet, Riesling is a favourite food wine.”
